poetry competitions

I’ve been doing it for a few months now, and i’m just wondering, is it normal? I find it a helpful way to release pent up emotions like anger and sadness. Most boys i know would consider it a feminine thing, and i know that they would be laughing at me for ages. My english teacher seemed quite surprised when i entered the school poetry competition, just wondering how you guys view it.
Here’s something i wrote a while back (can’t get it all on here);

Where are you now, my only star,
I have searched my heart, looked out far.
I’m blind, deaf and dumb, without your hand,
As my heart dies, I cannot stand.

I feel icy waves wracking my heart,
Pain spiking to every part.
Black thoughts to cloud my head,
On evil thoughts, my lust is fed.

I feel like I’m drowning, drowning in loss,
My sanity is leaving, passing across.
I cannot control it, my feral lust,
I want to rip and kill, I can’t, I must.

My dead hand wraps around the cold lifeless steel,
Its firm and hard, the only thing that’s real.
I gather my wits, and push open the door,
Out on a mission, sanity no more.

The streetlights flicker into life,
Unholy beams bounce of my knife,
I knock at his door, tool in hand,
Preparing to strike, a blow that will land.

The door creaks open, slowly at first,
I see his dark eyes, greedy with thirst.
I lunge with the knife, straight into his gut,
I plunge in deep, to widen the cut.
The blood is warm, the flesh feels good,
This is what I need, I can’t, I would.
His blood on my skin, staining my soul,
But I feel good, my lust under control.

He deserves what he got, for his sinful crime,
He raped me once, but for the last time.
He lies here now, dead at my feet,
His cursed arms, falling into the street.

I turn and run, through fresh rain,
I’ve done what I must, am I insane?
You may not see me, ever again,
I may not come back, what will you do then?

  • Awkward says:

its completely normal jonny - you are who you are, and sometimes ppl can’t perceive who that is until we show it and it really doesn’t matter how old you are or whether or not you’re a guy or a girl - we all have to release our emotions some way and if you choose to do that through poetry then carry on : )

Okay I’m not a guy but my brother is (obviously) and he’s written poetry pretty much since he could write. It’s not feminine. If you like it, do it. Maybe someday you’ll develop them into songs and have a music career.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, you have restored my faith in the male race!!! Some of THE BEST poets in the world are lads, like Robert Frost, Douglas Adems and Shakespeare. Its also a Amazing way to pull girls, i am 1, I should know. all of my friends wish there boyfriend wrote poetry and its just rapping without music! So, pleas carry on with it, and good luck!!

I started writing at about that age its absolutely normal there is nothing wrong with writing poetry. Poetry is a release and your teacher could have been surprised because not many look to poetry anymore and many people see poetry as a sign of weakness. Keep writing don’t stop and don’t feel like you’re weird for being an outcast is having your own style.

  • Artorius says:

There’s nothing wrong with anybody writing poetry at any age. People who laugh at others for writing poetry are often referred to as Philistines, at term used to denote people who don’t appreciate the arts. Maybe your young friends will grow out of it some day, but in the meantime, don’t let it discourage you. Keep on with the creative process and write, write, write…

  • Intrusivosity With Medium Doubt says:

    Dude,

Define normal, then you’ll have your answer.

    In the meantime, write and
    to hell what others think.
