writing poetry

I love writing poetry and want to make a living out of it. Alot of people tell me that I should make it a career. Where could I possibly look for a job to do so. Preferably over the internet because I’m a stay at home mother..Thanks!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no one makes a living writing poetry unless they are mind-staggeringly good at it. Perhaps you are. :)
You have to research poetry markets, learn how to prepare your poem for submission and then submit and wait for responses.

Submitting to greeting card companies may be an option.

If you’re lucky and very persistent, you can make some money.

I’m glad I can help. Poetry is a great career to start in writing and/or story creating. One way you could get started is by researching something to write about. This is very important; a lot of writers have trouble choosing a subject to write on and get stuck. Don’t worry;if you have a lot subjects, just choose one and get started;you have all the time in the world. Next, you should choose a form of poetry to write with. There are many kinds, like Limericks, Haiku, Cinquains, and Rhymes. Each kind has different characteristics; Limericks can only be written in 5 lines, Haiku has 3 lines with 5 syllables, another line with 7 syllables, and the last with with 5 syllables, Cinquains 1st line - 1 word - noun, 2nd line - 2 words - describe the noun, 3rd line - 3 words - actions,4th line - 4 words - feelings,5th line - 1 word - noun - another word for first word, and Rhymes, well you know what. The next step is to follow the guidelines and write. Maybe if my instructions suck you could consult a teacher. I’m only 11 years old, so please don’t be upset with me.

    Hoped I helped.

The book Poet’s Market (your local library might have a copy) can give you lots of information about print and online journals that publish poetry. You can also check this site for a listing of poetry journals:

Most journals do not pay for the poems they publish. Most books of poetry do not sell very many copies. And most poets earn only a tiny amount of money, if any, when they give public readings. Even the best-known, most widely published poets do not make a living from their poetry. They support themselves with other jobs, often as college or university teachers.
